Issues During Cancer Treatment
Jennifer Manghisi was born on June 1, 1984 in Lawrence, New York, studied business Management before pursing a fashion career. In 2006, she began interning in the corporate offices of iconic fashion designer Norma Kamali on 5th Avenue in the public relations department, where she learned everything there is to know about the exciting New York City fashion industry.
Manghisi worked her way up from intern to Public Relations Director, responsible for coordinating and executing each season’s photo shoots, market week appointments, press kits and all media outreaches. During that time, Norma Kamali entered into a partnership for a lower-priced collection with major retailer Wal-mart, Manghisi became the Public Relations Director for that instantly successful line.
While working for Norma Kamali and at the very young age of 24, Manghisi was diagnosed with Stage 0 non-invasive breast cancer in her right breast. Due to the diagnosis and the intense treatment schedule, Manghisi chose to step down from her position at Kamali to focus on her health. Though the diagnosis was bleak, Jennifer found the strength to be grateful that the prospects were not worse and, while undergoing chemotherapy, co-founded www.scenestirz.com, a popular pop culture blog. The blog became Manghisi’s creative outlet while she battled breast cancer. In January, 2009, the partners were offered a weekly radio spot on CBS’ The Unfiltered Show recorded in Howard Stern’s old studio.
Scenestirz.com was dissolved in 2011, but Manghisi turned her creativity to another project: writing about her battle with cancer. She published her first e-book with Booktango in October 2012, entitled A Sarcastic Guide to Beating Breast Cancer. In it, Manghisi shares what she learned on her journey to survival. An inspiring true story of will, determination, and perseverance with an eye toward style, A Sarcastic Guide garnered praise from critics. In March 2013, Manghisi was interviewed by Dana Tyler on CBS’ Eye on NY. She is now at work on her second book while working at EmblemHealth, and remains an all-around style inspiration in NYC.
